Any of you guys do any deep cranking, 15 - 20 foot or deeper? I had a guy do top soil and grass seed around the garage and he noticed the boat. I had a few Strike King 6xd's a Normans 22 deep and assorted other crank baits I've collected over the years hanging on the peg board. He went on to tell me what I was missing out on this time of the year. I was able to get rod, reel and line choices from him but he buttoned up when I asked about the type of structure and banks he looks for. I threw the 6xd for a few days and all I've got to show for it was a small white bass, a sore biceps and forearms. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Dan

Dan it's not as seasonal as he let you believe. In past days Fishhguy and I did a bunch of it at Cheroker and caught a lit of fish. DOUGLAS,CHEROKEE ,LOUDON are great deep cranking lakes. I have not found this to be the case at Norri. Here's the latest and best way. Find a dro p or hump that is rocky. Go to one side and cast away from the structure as far as you can. Leave the spopl open and with trolling motor move to the other side of the point drop or hump. Once you have cleared MIT take up ant slack. Point you rod at the water and begin cranking. Pay close attention to your lure. It has ti be making contact with the bottom in order to be effective. IF you hit something hard stop and allow the lure to start to float up then continue your retrieve.. what you hit hard may have been some fish holding hot spot. The fish tend to school in deep water. This method is called long linking. Iits the eeasiest way to cover lots of water and achieve maximum depth from you bait. To be continued.

Some facts to remember . Say your throwing a Dd22 or a DD 30 on you best cast you are only hitting 3/4;of that depth for just a few feet. By long l8neing you actually stay in touch with the bottom for a much longer distance. Even still At amortis during the late morning or mid day you may find the fish deeper than you are able to get a crangbsit down too. I usually fish for smallies and in the summer sometimes i find them 30 to 35 feet deep. 1, use you electronics 2. Believe what they tell you. This ultra clear water puts them deeper Tyan most lakes in the region. Most of you large m9uth will be in the deeper sections of creeks not rye channel. A 45 degree drip with a lot if blowdowns can yield great catches. I like a 3,/4 ounce spinnerbait or a real noisy b7zz bait on the summer on these places. Once the sun hits them its iver so it a early deal and often banks that are facing the west are best. Once the sun get on the water look fir 20 plus brush or sometime cover off shore. Let us know how it goes. Long lining is much easier on you arms and back. F2w

Yeah, I'm under no delusions that I'll be a deep crankin' guru anytime soon... Although I did get two smallies that where about as big as the 6xd I was throwing yesterday. I keep hitting those hump and hopefully I catch a few bigger than the crankbait I'm throwing... Dan

Some of the best days for Long Lining are September and October, so don't give up. I have had some great deep cranking days above Brogan especially at or above the crossroads, I would have a No 11 shad Rap tie on another Road with a 20 Plus Rapala and another rod with a DD30, casting parallel to the bank on certain conture lines is far more effective than casting shallow to deep, F2W PS here is a little wisdom that I learned when tournament fishing back in the day, it might make since to you about lure selection and explain to you why OI fish certain baits so often
Crankbaits catch more fish, but big spinnerbaits catch bigger fish Plastic worms catch more fish, but jigs catch bigger fish so, do you want quantity or quality? seldom fished baits can catch better and more fish. Like a jigging spoon when the fish are 30 plus feet deep. At Norris a plastic lizard text posed on a lead head is a great brush bait and will outperform a worm.
