We all know that bass are sensitive to noise and that they have two different ways to hear. The lateral line and an inner ear. But what does this all mean.
Since we were all fishing with gran pa in his little aluminum, boat we have been told to be quite. You will scare the fish. So we try very hard to be stealthy quite while moving along an area. We think that any noise that is made may scare the fish of a lifetime.
Lets examine what noise is to a bass, Because of gran pa"s insistent warning we thing the under water world of the bass is very quite. The reality is just the opposite. Bass hear vibrations and they hear noise like we do,. So this means that everything that moves in the water is producing a noise. That boat across the lake, that wave slapping the shore or that fish that just jumped. Everything that is moving makes noise. So what's a bass to do. We know they are opportunistic feeders so how do they use their great hearing to survive, The bass simply rules out that constant noise and listen for or focuses on the erratic noise. Have you ever watch a dying minnow, It swims a little and then stops . It repeats this many times. Each time it try's to swim it make a noise that the bass hears, But just as import it does not make a noise when it stops swimming. Bass hone in on erratic noises and block continuous noises out. So when you work you lure in an erratic manner it is much more likely to attract a bass than a steady chunk and wind, It hears that erratic noise that is getting louder as it comes closer. They are curious. Is this my next meal. Then, they see it. perhaps smell it and attack.
Now take this a bit further . How can erratic noise spook the fish or call attention to us. Here is a common way.
You pull up to your favorite point, You drop the trolling motor and begin to position your boat. You step on the on switch and move the boat a distance and then let off. You make a few cast and get no response so once again you step on the trolling motor. You repeat this many time as you fish down that bank. What did this sound like to a bass, it was vibration hum. vibration hum. It was creating a erratic noise that drew the fishes attention. Bass do learn through repeated memory enforcement. If they hear this often enough then the learn to relate this noise to danger. I use a hand controlled motor. Why because I can put it on a constant slow crawl and go all the way down a bank without turning it off or changing the vibration. If I need to adjust my angle that is sassily done without changing the speed of the motor or the motors vibration. Some foot control motors have a continuous setting. Did you ever wonder why. Sure you still catch some fish, but, how many and what size. Big momma bass don't get big by stupidity. They will be the first ones to spook, This is especially true when fishing docks or flipping brush.
What are some other things you may do that would cause a bass to notice danger, How about a radio playing rick music with the erratic beat. That gets transferred to the water. Take the time to stop and think about what noises you are making. Bass are animals just like deer or boar. A stealthy approach can make a huge difference, F2W
