In recent years very few people fished for bass in the winter. Most believed that the fish were dormant and did not hit, Then slowly people have began to learn that the larger fish often hit in the winter, This has created more interest but still most stay by the fire, In our enthusiasm to catch big wintertime bass we forget that the weather effects more than the water temperature , It creates a whole new set of dangers that can easily go ignored.
Clothing manufactures have created the best insulated warm clothing for outdoors enthusiast ever. These can be a life saver or a life ender. Start your safety check by making a list and equipping yourself with the emergency things you may need,
1 never go out without a way to make a fire. There are few people on the water especially on week days and motor trouble close to dark could strand you and long way from help, If you have to stay the night a fire could go a long way,
2 Always store a mess kit and a can of something plus drinking water. I keep the old style boy scout mess kit and a couple of cans of soup.
3 Keep a change of cloths. Wet cloths can create a dangerous situation even if you can make it in to the truck. A 15 minuet ride in 45 degree weather can cause hypothermia.
4 Learn how to get back into the boat if you fall in. You think you are strong and could hoist you self over the side to get out of the water. Once all the clothes you are wearing become wet you weight is greatly increased, In some cases even with the help of a partner you may not be able to pull over the side . In 45 degree water you will go into hypothermia within 15 minuets in the water. Some boats like the Triton have a pull out ladder in the transom but most don't. Climb the lower unit of the boat and then depress the power trim switch. This will lift you out of the water and then you can fall onto the rear deck or across the transom. Once you are on board strip off the wet clothes and put on dry ones.
5 always make sure to connect your kill switch
6 Keep your cel phone in a dry place. If you have trouble and have a phone signal you can call for help.
7 Always make sure someone knows what lake you are going to and where you will launch.
Observing a few common since safety measure could save your life. Take the time to make sure you are ready for the worst. F2w
