Today as it turned out would have been a great day to be out. I begged off due to the weather man and like most weather reports in this area it was dead wrong./ It was a dark over cast day with light wind warm temps and a slight sprinkle periodically.
It reminded me of a day in 1997. It was a Saturday and we were fishing the Mountaineer Bass masters Classic at Douglas lake. The conditions were almost identical except the water clarity at Douglas was about a foot. We blasted off out of the Dam Ramp. I went straight to a small creek just below McGuire Creek. I had seen two boats already set up on points throwing Crank baits. I considered the conditions and choose to throw a 3.4 oz Hawg Caller spinnerbait. I had changed the skirt to chartreuse and red and changed the big blade on the tandem spin to a Ultra- vibe- gold Indiana blade for increase vibration. I began to cast the bait very close to the shore and with my rod tip almost touching the water slow rolled the bait back. To make a long story short I weighed 5 bass , All largemouth that went 15 .3. I actually caught 12 keepers that day on the home modified bait and had culled to my best 5.
I selected that bait for several reasons. First a bigger 3/4 oz bait will catch better quality fish this time of year. A bait with a heavier body with support a heavy vibrating blade better and allow it to really put out some noise. The chocolate milk color of the water can be especially good to show off red colors. and gold blades will produce more flash in muddy water than chrome blade
I think today would have been a good day with a blade. I believe the fish would have been a little deeper that that day many years ago at Douglas due to water clarity. The retrieve speed may have had to be a little faster again due to water clarity.Still the dark sky low barometer conditions would have made this s good selection.\
Maybe tomorrow will be similar, If so I try and let you know if I am right or not on the fishing report page, .
PS For some reason I am have difficulty with the picture page; I will try to work it out asap and let you know of any pages. Its been a good while since anyone used it and the main problem may be with Photo Bucket and not our sight,
