I read a very interesting article today. It was about proper care of your bass boat, You see lots of articles about appearance care and a few about engine maintenance but this o0ne was very unique. It was about live well cleaning and care. We never really think about the live well it gets water and gets emptied how dirty could it be. We are all aware of keeping our fish alive in a tournament but then we still loose a fish here and there. The problem is algae, fish waste build up and other pollutants in the pump system. These get started and only get worse. The fish are poisoned by then and we don't see anything. Here is a simple way to properly maintain this very important part of your fishing equipment. Even if you do not fish tournaments but put an occasional crappie or walleye in you livewell to eat you are polluting them,
The cleaning equipment that you need can be bought at any store for less than $10.00 . You will need to quarts of apple cider vinegar, and two bottles of hydrogen peroxide. make sure your live well is clean by washing it well and remove all filters and clean them. Don't forget the one at the transom of your boat as well as the drain, Replace all the filters and turn your live well switch to Recirc . Pour all the ingredients into the live well and then add tap water till about 2/3 full. Turn on your aerator and allow it to run for 30 minuets, This will clean the pumps and all plumbing killing any algae or other containments, . Next drain the live well completely. Put the recirc setting back on, Again fill with tap water and turn on your pumps for an additional 30 minuets, You will notice the pumps are displacing more water, After the thirty minuets is up drain you live well again. This should restore the well pumps and other plumbing to clean normal operation.
I hope mthis gives you an idea of what to do to maintain your live well. I never realized this needed to be done until it was pointed out to me. F2W
