In search of as much info as I can find out about my grandfathers 1990 Norris craft with a (he claims even though I can't find anything on it when I google it) 1991 mercury 2.5 racing with a carb? I have mechanical experience and have rebuilt engines but I have never worked on an outboard and no nothing of 2.5's except that they were the bee's knee's back in the day. I'm mainly in search of what type of fuel/mix/oil to use and how to change it/maintain it. I would like to find a manual or some type of guide for this engine seeing as it was sold publicly (maybe? Or a special buy?) I think it would have came with a manual of some kind. Any help is greatly appreciated!

a 2.5 off shore motor that was common on N C back in the day.

Found this info on a Merc website. mercurymarine.sv7076.si-servers.com/home/service-warranty/service-maintenance/fuel-oils-recommendations-outboards.aspxLooks like 50:1 fuel/oil mixture which is pretty standard for most 2-stoke engines. Note: If an outbound doesn't have a separate oil tank, then you'll have to mix the fuel with oil (50 parts fuel to 1 part oil) before adding to fuel tank. If it does have an oil tank or reservoir, the engines VRO (variable ratio oiling) system will do the mixing for you. Link above also prescribes type of oil to use. If you can find the serial number on the outboard, I'm certain you could also get a service manual directly from Mercury. Good luck!

Those engines were prone to ring problems. the fix from mercury back in the day was to use only fully synthetic oil and add some to the gas as well as the injection. Those engines are very high reving engines and that is where the problem comes in. Tey were designed to be high torgue low rpm engines and used in tandem with a left turning and right turning prop engine. I had two friend that had them on Norris Crafts. You can call Mack Crumley at Norris craft in Lafollette and he can tell you much more. They would set those up with hydraulic jack plates and turn them 8ooo RPM. The Crumelys may have set a couple up with nitrous Oxide , Richard Crumley can work on that motor. F2W
