If you just updated the electronics on your boat you probably thought you had seen and studied everything that would be available for a few years. You may have added Down Shot imaging, Side Scan imaging and the latest in Lake Map imaging. You thought this was the latest and greatest aids for reading lake contours and locating fish.
The new technology is expanding so fast that the unit you just bought will be obsolete before the end of the summer. Hummingbird is set to debut an all new 360 degree scan aimed at the bass fishing market. The new unit will scan completely around your boat not just on one side or the other.
Don’t despair, the new technology will up date to your current side scan by way of a software update and a new transducer.
Hummingbird product development staff says a few more features will be added before it is released later this summer. The 360 degree imaging will enable an angler to not just see what is beside the boat but what is out in front and behind up to 150 feet. This would enable you to anticipate creek channel bends, stump beds or brush piles before you reach them not when you reach them. For the first time an angler can have their boat in a stationary position and receive updated information instantly from around the entire boat.
In the late 1960’s Hummingbird introduced an affordable depth sounder that we called a flasher. This apparatus showed us the depth of the water under the boat and anything that was swimming under that beam as a flash of light. Anglers all over the country rushed to purchase that device with the belief that it would make them instant professional fisherman. The common excuse to the wife was that it would add a huge degree of safety by helping you see the bottom depth keeping you from running aground,
Today we have an almost television like real time image of the bottom, any obstacle on the bottom and the fish. This device to those that learn to use it will aid in finding fish and fish holding locations. It would seem that the fish do not have a chance because it would be impossible for them to hide from the savvy anglers electronics. Give it up largemouth get in that live well.
This can be a great tool, but it is simply that, one more improved device to give you information. How you use that information will make the difference in how good your results are. Choosing the proper lure, presentation, and practicing good stealth will still be a huge factor that will determine the degree of success you will have.
I have invested in the new technology but I have to temper it with something else that I believe. I think that the bass have become conditioned to the feel of the sonar beam and danger. I frequently turn off my LCR when fishing in confined areas especially in water less than twenty feet deep. I believe because of the sophisticated hearing system that the fish have, they feel the sonar waves and have learned to identify that feeling with danger.
Your new high power sonar device will also make a clicking sound that is audible to humans and creates a vibration that is also audible to the fish. The more power the more noise. These new units produce more power than we have typically used. The new units are great for locating fish or potential fishing locations but you may find it better to turn them off once you have defined the area you are fishing.
