Drilled spools are lighter and supposedly reduce inertia making lighter baits easier to cast. I don't really know, I fish light lures and all soft plastics on spinning tackle. My rule of thumb is spinning tackle for baits <1/2 oz, baitcasting gear for everything 1/2 oz>.

Ditto what roadwarrior said. The drilled spool makes it easier to cast small baits. About the lightest I use on a baitcaster are weightless superflukes and lizards. I dont have any problems.
